Fit creativity into your busy life with Flex-Class. Sign up for a course – if you need to miss a class, or want to change your course, use remaining Flex-Class slots for other classes the following session at the Phoenix Village Art Center.

Flex-Classes carry over from the fall to the winter session, so you can use them to make art and suit your own schedule over time.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Adult Classes
10 weeks: Monday January 9 through Wednesday March 14


Adult Crafts Classes


Open Ceramics Studio
The newly renovated ceramic studio will be open to students on Wednesdays from 1:00 until 3:00.  A studio tech will be available for consultation and guidance. This is a perfect opportunity for students to practice new skills at their own pace. This is a great way to meet other ceramics artists and students and learn your way around the studio.
FREE for students currently enrolled in a ceramics course at the art center, otherwise the fee is:
members $10 • non-members $12

Mosaics with Kelly Swenson
Learn the basics of decorative Mosaics using household objects, glass, tile, china & ceramics. Explore making your own tiles from clay. Start digging in the garbage, cabinets, yard sales, trash pickings and thrift shops for interesting objects to mosaic on and with. Bring your findings to the first class for show and tell.
Add a $25 materials fee paid first day of class.
Tuesday mornings from 10:00 until 12:00

Colored Clay with Nell Hazinski
Using the Japanese technique, Neriage, learn how to make decorative pots with the designs created directly in the clay, rather than the glaze. We’ll introduce color into the clay body, and use the colored clay to make “clay fabric” of decorative patterns such as spiral swirls, stripes, polka dots etc.  This “clay fabric” will be used to form slab pots. Perfect for beginners and also more experienced artists. 
Add a $60 material fee for clay, stains & glazes

Ceramics with Roseanne D’Andrea
Get your hands dirty learning all about clay! Explore hand building to get to know and understand clay and its properties, then try your hand at the wheel. This class will open your eyes to what makes pottery so appealing. This is a beginner class but all levels are welcome. 
Add a $40 materials fee for clay, glazes & firing.
Wednesday Evenings from 7:00 until 9:00
10 weeks: January 11 through March 14

Tile Making with Kelly Swenson
Most people think of tiles as a way to decorate a bathroom or kitchen. Tiles have so much more to them and have the ability to become small works of art. Learn the basics of tile-making: carving; molding for production tiles; non-traditional shapes; stamping to create texture.
Add a $40 materials fee for plaster, clay, glaze, and firing. This course includes a field trip to see the Moravian Tile Works in Bucks County for an additional $4.50 per person.

Sculpture with Roseanne D’Andrea
A beginners sculpture class where the process of sculpting is explained. Build an armature, sculpt in clay, make a mold, cast in plaster. Scale, additive and subtractive techniques is covered using a three dimensional model. It is important that you plan to attend this class each week in order to move through the process completely.  
Add a $50 materials fee for clay, plaster and the tools needed.

Adult Painting and Drawing Classes


Drawing the Elements of Art and Nature with Kathryn Noska
Learn about the elements of art including Value, Design, Shape, Line and Color and how they relate to the elements of nature- Spirit, Water, Earth, Air and Fire.  Explore the art of symbolism while working on 5 different still life drawings.

Painting with Pastels
Outside the Lines with Kathryn Dawe
Enhance your creativity and simplify what you see through value and color expression. Using charcoal and pastels create the illusion of  three dimensional subjects on a flat surface. Break old habits and create new insights learning to trust your instincts and have fun while doing it. Supply list given upon registration. All levels welcome.

Basics of Acrylic Painting with Jennifer Scott
Explore your creative side — Discover your inner artist. Experiment with a range of approaches to painting; learn the art of color and composition. Learn to make mono prints, portraits, reinvent the landscape, and experiment with the abstract.
Wednesday evenings from 7:00-9:00

Find Your Creative Outlet with Janice LaBarge
Ever wonder what it would be like to work with acrylics, oil paint sticks, pastels or watercolors? Try these mediums without investing in all the supplies before you are sure! Explore a different medium each week. The instructor supplies the medium — you supply the curiosity.
Add a $20 materials fee.
Students bring their own support (canvas, mortar board ect.)
Tuesday Morning from 10:30-12:30

Open Sketch Night • Life Drawing
All levels, Adults only.
Open sketch night is an opportunity for artists to draw from the live model. We do short-timed sketches and extended poses for more finished drawings. Easels and drawing benches and boards are available for use. Drop-ins are welcome, but registration is encouraged. BYOB as well as desired drawing materials. Please arrive no later than 7:15 to draw.

Children and Teen Classes

10 weeks: Monday January 9 through Wednesday March 14

Kids and Clay with Makeda Marley
Explore the world of clay! Children make sculpture and pottery using oil-based clay, ceramic clay and model magic. They explore the basic properties of the clay, additive and subtractive sculpture techniques and hand building ceramic techniques.
All ceramic work is glazed and fired.
Add an additional $10 material fee.
Tuesday (ages 6 to 9) 4:30 to 6:00
10 weeks: January 10 thru March 13
Thursday (ages 10 to12) 4:30 to 6:00
10 weeks: January 12 thru March 15

2-D Drawing & Design with Lauren Acton
Using the basic Elements of Art: line, shape, form, space, texture, value and color, children explore the world of art. Each class begins with a right brain exercise, learning how to view  their surroundings with an artist eye. Several mediums used, including pencil, charcoal, paint and cut paper. Focus is on both traditional drawing skills and design elements.

Digital Photography for Teens with Janette McVey
Develop your creative eye with weekly photo assignments that encourage you to find new perspectives, improve your composition and practice techniques. Learn basic digital camera operation. Discover creative ways to work with light, point-of-view and composition. Beginners to intermediate. Bring a DSLR or digital point and shoot (preferably with manual capability). Laptop suggested but not required.
Thursday 5:00 to 6:30
10 weeks: January 12 thru March 15

Portfolio Review
For teens. Are you applying to an art school that requires a portfolio? Call the art center to schedule a personal review. We will provide a professional artist to critique your portfolio. Find out what you can do improve your selections, and the presentation of your work to open doors to your future. 
Free for any teen attending classes at the Phoenix Village Art Center.


Other Programs

Adesha Art
The Phoenix Village Art Center has joined with Adesha Village to provide programming that promotes mental health through ART. Adult students meet at the art center and work with staff creating works of art. Contact the art center if you, a family member, or client are interested.

Use Flex-Class packs to pay for Adult Art Classes at Phoenix Village Art Center.
It’s a great way to fit creativity into your busy life!
With Flex-Classes you attend when you can, and save unused Flex-Classes for the following season.
How Flex-Class works
Purchase Flex-Classes in packs good for classes or workshops of your choice.
Should you miss a class you can make it up the following session’s classes.
FLEX CLASSES are valid for one additional session after original purchase
(For Example: Flex Classes purchased Janurary 1 are valid until March 14)





General Flex Class Information



  • Special classes and workshops are marked with prices: all others are part of the flex-class program.
  • FLEX CLASSES are valid for one additional session after original purchase

  • Adult classes are held in 2 hour sessions.
  • Adults supply their own materials or pay a separate materials fee.
  • Children and Teen classes are held in 1 ½ hour sessions.
  • All materials are provided for children and teen classes.
  • Class sessions can be purchased in packages and be used for any class.
  • Pre-registration is required for class sessions so that instructors can be prepared for those attending.
  • Any week that is missed can be made up by either attending a different class in the same session or “saving” it until the next session. Unused flex classes expire if not used during the session directly following the session they were purchased for.
  • If you want to make up a session by attending a class that you are not registered for, please call ahead so that the instructor is prepared for you to attend. 610 983-9430
  • At each class: pick up and sign your attendance card (filed alphabetically) and give to the instructor.
